Commercial Ethernet switches are designed for installation in a business-office environment, within a temperature-controlled wiring closet. So they are rated for commercial temperature range (0—40° C) and do not publish shock and vibration specs. Industrial Ethernet Switches are rated for operation in a minimum temperature range of 0—70° C and specify shock & vibration tolerance ratings. Commercial switches typically provide a single AC power supply, while Industrial network switches typically come with redundant inputs for DC power. This power solution strengthens the weakest link: the power supply, thus ensuring maximum uptime by providing a hot-standby (back-up) power source.
Industrial Ethernet devices are often enclosed in a ruggedized encasement, and equipped with rugged, watertight connectors on one or both ends of the Cat-5 or Cat-6 cable. Such connectors include M12 connectors or M8 connectors, in contrast to the 8P8C connectors typically used in a home or business network.
Further, many Industrial Ethernet switches carry a Class I Div 2, group ABCD rating whereas commercial versions do not. This rating means the Industrial Ethernet switch can operate where explosive gases are present, which is not unusual in certain industrial network switching applications.
